Hallyuwood is the colloquial term for the South Korean Entertainment Industry, which seems to have taken the OTT market by storm – especially on Netflix. While there have been some quality South Korean projects coming out which received international acclaim like ‘Train to Busan’, ‘Okja’, ‘Parasite’ and ‘Kingdom’ – the demand for more South Korean content came in 2021, after the “Squid Game boom”. Since then multiple other South Korean projects have been released on Netflix; and while they haven’t gone on to reach the heights of success like ‘Squid Game’, most of them have been considered successes so far. Does this mean that Netflix has found their latest goldmine to “mine projects” in the South East Asian film industry?
Hallyuwood is a name derived after combining the words Hallyu and Hollywood. Hallyu means Korean wave or K-wave, and that is exactly what seems to have infected the globe, thanks to some of the incredible movies and TV shows coming out of the country (as mentioned earlier). A few years back, Netflix was capitalizing on a lot of non-British European projects like ‘Dark’, ‘Money Heist’, ‘Elite’, etc. However, after the release of ‘Squid Game’, the OTT platform seems to be concentrating on Korean projects for now. ‘My Name’ and ‘Hellbound’ were released on Netflix after ‘Squid Game’ and has managed to grab the attention of millions of Netflix subscribers around the globe. Another show worth watching, which was released earlier in the year (before ‘Squid Game’), is the gangster show, ‘Vincenzo’.
In ten days, another Korean series is going to drop on Netflix – and it is an ambitious one. Titled ‘The Silent Sea‘, the show is set in the future where it has become difficult to acquire clean water anywhere on the planet. A group of scientists find out that the answer to their water problems could be found on an abandoned moon station, so they decide to fly to the satellite. However, when the team reaches the moon station, they find out that they are not alone.
‘The Silent Sea’ will premiere on Netflix on 24th December 2021. Check out the trailer below:
