Just a few months back, we had made our readers aware that a multi-season series based on India’s iconic personality Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi aka Mahatma Gandhi was in the works and ‘Scam 1992’ actor Pratik Gandhi was roped in to essay the titular role in the epic series. And now, in an equally exciting update, ‘Scam 1992’ director Hansal Mehta, who had directed Pratik Gandhi in the acclaimed financial thriller, has reportedly (via Deadline) been brought in as the showrunner and director for the ambitious project, tentatively titled ‘Gandhi’, which is being developed by Sameer Nair led Applause Entertainment.
Not just that, India’s well-known veteran quiz master Siddhartha Basu, the man behind the long-standing quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, has also been roped in for the ‘Gandhi’ series as a historical consultant, factual advisor and creative consultant.
Such is the scale of the project that Hansal Mehta has himself termed ‘Gandhi’ series as perhaps his most defining story in his career as a filmmaker in addition to being a big privilege and a huge responsibility.
Being touted as India’s answer to the widely admired Netflix historical drama series ‘The Crown’, ‘Gandhi’ is being adapted from eminent Indian historian and author Ramachandra Guha’s books namely ‘Gandhi Before India’ and ‘Gandhi – The Years That Changed the World’, which narrated a detailed account on the life story of the legendary freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi.
‘Gandhi’ series will ostensibly showcase the early years of Mahatma Gandhi when he was a lawyer in South Africa to his pivotal role in the Indian independence freedom struggle in India. The show will also focus on Mahatma Gandhi’s relationships with his colleagues and enemies. It will explore the lesser-known aspects related to Mahatma Gandhi’s life and stories about his contemporaries, who played a crucial role in the Indian freedom movement.
It is also apparent that Hansal Mehta will direct the whole series himself. And considering a filmmaker of Hansal Mehta’s calibre and vision (Scam 1992, City Lights, Aligarh, Shahid) and with Pratik Gandhi headlining the series, it seems that ‘Gandhi’ is heading in the right direction.
