Our world lost a great talent in the form of Chadwick Boseman on August 28 last year. The actor battled colon cancer for nearly five long years. He took his final breath at his home with his family by his side. He didn’t open up about his disease with people or the media. But he continued to star in various cinematic projects despite suffering from this terrible disease. To celebrate the one and only Black Panther’s legacy on his birthday, let’s have a look at his top five performances!
5. Jackie Robinson – 42 (2013)
It is a traditional and well-respected biopic of the legendary baseball player. And Boseman delivered a proper tribute to the character by giving a committed and mesmerising performance as Jackie Robinson. There are times when the actor seems to carry the whole movie on his shoulders despite having a veteran like Harrison Ford in the cast.
4. James Brown – Get on Up (2014)
Boseman portrayed the Godfather of Soul with everything he had in this musical biopic. It is the movie that established him as a real deal in Hollywood. Even though the project was a financial failure, but Chadwick’s heartfelt performance won the hearts of the viewers.
3. T’Challa/Black Panther – Black Panther (2018)
All hail the Wakandan king!
Marvel couldn’t have found a better performer to don this iconic character except for Boseman. He was truly sensational in this one. Yes, this project has significant importance in the history of the Hollywood film industry. But it was Chadwick who made this project special. Also, Ryan Coogler’s top-notch direction and Micheal B. Jordan’s hard-hitting performance added much-needed flavours to this superhero project.
2. Norman “Stormin” Earl Holloway – Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Moviegoers always get a unique cinematic experience while watching Spike Lee’s projects. He keeps pushing the boundaries of conventional movie-making. But he knows how to keep his performers in the spotlight. That’s exactly what he did with Boseman in this film. It is almost impossible to shine among a talented pool of actors consisting of veterans like Delroy Lindo and Clarke Peters. But Chadwick did the job effortlessly. His screentime was way too less than other actors. Still, he leaves his eternal impact in the movie.
1. Levee Green – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)
This play-turned musical drama treasures the career-best performance of Chadwick Boseman. His infectious acting skills sparkled every time he appeared on the screen in this one. He never had a dull moment in this August Wilson’s story. Naturally, he bagged a Golden Globe for his memorable performance. He even got nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.
