All diehard cinephiles must have already seen John McTiernan’s classic sci-fi actioner ‘Predator’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. The critical and commercial success of the film resulted in three sequels in 1990, 2010, and 2018 besides spawning several Alien-Predator crossover movies. But none of these films were able to surpass the parent ‘Predator’ film in the minds of audiences and critics. Now, with the release of Hulu’s ‘Predator’ sequel titled ‘Prey’, has the latest entrant finally toppled Predator as the best reviewed film of the franchise? Let’s find out.
The first ‘Predator’ movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger currently holds an impressive 82% critics score on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes. Critics’ reviews for all the sequels and spin-offs that were released between ‘Predator’ and ‘Prey’ were not even remotely close to the first film. The closest was Adrien Brody’s 2010 film ‘The Predators’ with 65% RT score.
But now, after the release of Hulu’s ‘Prey’, that equation has changed as ‘Prey’ currently holds a whopping 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 157 reviews. That makes ‘Prey’ the best reviewed Predator movie ever, even better than the parent film.
However, interestingly, the audience score of ‘Predator’ on Rotten Tomatoes is 87% while ‘Prey’ is marginally behind with an audience score of 83%. It remains to be seen whether that improves in the next few days.
Moreover, the user rating of the 1987 ‘Predator’ movie on IMDb is 7.8. On the other hand, the IMDb rating for the recently released ‘Prey’ is currently 7.2. This implies that the audience feedback is currently in favor of Arnold’s ‘Predator’ while ‘Prey’ is currently leading with respect to the critics’ score.
The original film ‘Predator’ revolved around a rescue mission in a Central American jungle given to an elite commandos’ team led by Vietnam War veteran (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger). The mission takes an unexpected turn when the team is hunted down by a technologically advanced extraterrestrial warrior called the Predator.
‘Prey’, helmed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), revolves around a highly skilled female warrior Naru, who battles with a much more advanced alien predator in order to protect her tribe.
