If you think this is about the recent superhit Malayalam film ‘Sookshmadarshini’ then you are totally wrong. This isn’t the only time Basil Joseph has delivered a blockbuster dark comedy, he had done it in 2022 too.
We are talking about Vipin Das directorial ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’, a satirical drama on gender stereotypes but in a very fresh, innovative and fun manner.
After the news of her affair with her college professor comes out, Jaya’s (Darshana Rajendran) conservative parents decide to get her married before she gets to complete her education. Poultry farm owner Rajesh seems to be the perfect groom and he even agrees to let Jaya continue her studies after marriage.
But it’s only after marriage when Jaya moves into Rajesh’s home that she learns how her husband is a typical male chauvinist, is aggressive, short tempered and has no regard for others. He doesn’t even let her study further now. Jaya soon starts to suffocate in this marriage. Will she break free from these shackles? If yes, then how?
This “how” is what makes ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’ most interesting. The film sends out a strong message on various societal issues, specially domestic violence but does not feel overly preachy. Infact the comeback scenes will make you laugh rather than emotional while also feeling proud of the female lead.
The lead cast has delivered stellar performances and the narrative keeps you hooked throughout. ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’ is a must watch and the fact that it’s fun and not depressing despite its theme makes it more amazing.
