HBO has officially pulled the plug on the Perry Mason reboot series after two seasons. The show revolved around the origin story of popular lawyer Perry Mason. Acclaimed author Erie Stanley Gardner created the iconic character. The series takes the viewers back to 1932 when Los Angeles was prospering, and the rest of the United States was trying hard to recover from the Great Depression. During this time, Perry struggled with his inner demons, which emerged due to the Great Depression and his divorce from his wife.
Both seasons have met with strong positive critical reception. Upon its debut in June 2020, the show opened with strong viewership numbers. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 has a rating of 75%, based on 84 reviews. Whereas the second season stands with a rating of 86%, based on 28 reviews.
The duo of Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald created the Perry Mason reboot series, with Susan Downey and Robert Downey Jr serving as executive producers. Led by Matthew Rhys, the series’ other cast members are Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Tatiana Maslany, John Lithgow, Katherine Waterston, and many more.
The series has a total of 16 episodes from two seasons. In July 2020, HBO renewed the show for a second season. However, Jones and Fitzgerald left the show due to creative differences. As a result, they got replaced by Michael Begler and Jack Amiel.
HBO released a statement regarding the cancellation of Perry Mason:
“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.”
