Back in 2011, a Norwegian action thriller dropped in theatres around the globe called ‘Headhunters’. While the film did not garner much international attention, it became the highest-grossing Norwegian film in history. In 2013, HBO decided to buy up the production rights of the film to make a TV series based on the same movie. However, after years of keeping the project on ice, Swedish media company, C More and Norway’s TV2 have decided to revive the TV series project – with the filming already underway.
As it was mentioned earlier, ‘Headhunters’ isn’t as popular as it should be, especially at the time of its release – but it is now a world-renowned cult classic. The movie was based on the 2008 novel of the same name by the Norwegian writer, Jo Nesbo. The spin-off series has been a long time dream project for both the writer as well as the team behind the original film, Yellowbird Norway and the director, Morten Tyldum.
After almost ten years, the production of the spin-off is finally underway. According to the latest reports, this new spin-off series will be set 10 years before the 2011 ‘Headhunters’ film. This adaptation will be directed by Geir Henning Hopeland, who will be co-writing the screenplay with Rolf-Magne G. Andersen. While we do not know how the spin-off series will turn out compared to the original film, we are sure that this 2022 releasing web series will reach way more people than ‘Headhunters’ did back in 2011. And who knows, knowing Netflix, we wouldn’t be surprised if the OTT conglomerate swoops up this series and spreads it across the globe. For now, we will have to wait for the filming part of the series to end.
