There’s lots happening up at the Warner Bros. Discovery offices. For those who don’t know, ever since Discovery Plus merged with Warner Bros., the first priority of the newly formed content giant has been to merge the pre-existing streaming platforms of the two individual companies – namely, Discovery Plus and HBO Max – into a new, combined streamer. Warner Bros. Discovery executives are said to be racing against the clock and are hard at work to expedite the launch of the new, Discovery Plus + HBO Max combined streaming platform.
Now, the latest news on the front is that the soon-to-be-launched new combined streaming service has got a tentative name – it will most likely be called ‘Max’. Several top executives at Warner Bros. are in favour of keeping ‘HBO’ somewhere in the title, given the enduring legacy of the content behemoth, HBO.
But others are of the opinion that keeping HBO in the title would cause consumers outside the USA to confuse the new streamer with older platforms such as HBO Go and HBO Now. So ‘Max’ is what the new streamer is most likely to be called.
The app will be designed along the lines of the Disney Plus app. It will have separate tiles for individual brands – HBO, Discovery, DC, Warner Bros., CNN, and so on, just like Disney Plus has for Marvel, Disney, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star.
As to when will the new Discovery Plus + HBO Max streaming platform come to India, the answer lies in the tentative timeline shared by the company. Warner Bros. Discovery has brought forward the launch of the new streaming platform from the earlier Summer 2023 to Spring 2023 in the United States.
The streaming platform will then be rolled out in Latin America later in 2023, and then in Europe in 2024. This means that the India launch of HBO Max + Discovery Plus will not happen before late 2024. It could even be pushed ahead to 2025. One likely advantage for the India launch of HBO Max + Discovery Plus is that Discovery Plus already has a robust presence in India. Its infrastructure will certainly come in handy when HBO Max makes its way to the country.
