It is an absolutely undeniable fact that Netflix makes one of the finest documentaries in the world. After BBC, there is hardly any competition as the platform has tons of achievement to boast of. On the other hand, platforms like Prime Video and Disney+ keep on attempting at documentaries but that never really helps.
On the other hand, if you closely think then more than Prime Video or Disney+, the actual serious competition of Netflix is Max. They have a more than fantastic library that is hard to match and they are very consistent with buzzy shows.
Well, on one hand Warner Bros, Fox and Disney joined hands for killing the aggressive sports venture of Netflix. On the other hand, Max is trying to step into the field of documentaries with a really promising series. Interestingly, the trailer shows that the content and execution of the series is very similar to that of Netflix.
HBO’s new documentary “MoviePass, MovieCrash” dives into the rise and fall of MoviePass, a movie subscription service that went from boom to bust. Founded by Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt, the company initially soared with its innovative idea of offering discounted movie tickets through a monthly subscription. However, under new leadership, including CEOs Mitch Lowe and Ted Farnsworth, things took a turn for the worse.
The documentary sheds light on how MoviePass skyrocketed in popularity, with subscriptions exploding due to a too-good-to-be-true $9.95 monthly deal. But behind the scenes, mismanagement and lavish spending on parties led to the company losing over $150 million in 2017 alone, eventually leading to bankruptcy in 2019.
Former executives, including Lowe and Farnsworth, faced legal troubles, with indictments for securities fraud and embezzlement. Meanwhile, MoviePass was revived in 2023 by its original founder, Stacy Spikes, who now leads the company. But, the future doesn’t look bright. This documentary more than anything would serve as an ad campaign for MoviePaas.
“MoviePass, MovieCrash” premieres on Wednesday, May 29. Needless to say, it would be streaming on JioCinema in India. Let’s wait to see what kind of documentary it indeed is.
