In April last year, it was reported that WarnerMedia’s streaming platform HBO Max had collaborated with J.J. Abram’s production company Bad Robots Production to develop a spin-off series ‘Overlook’ based on Stephen King’s cult horror novel ‘The Shining’.
But now it has been revealed that HBO Max is reportedly not going ahead with ‘Overlook’. Consequently, the project is now on the lookout for a new streaming home. Although it is not yet confirmed, but most likely Overlook’s new home might be OTT giant Netflix (as per Deadline).
Despite the premium appeal and immense OTT potential for a project like ‘Overlook’, the reason for HBO Max opting out of the project is subject to speculation. One probable reason could be a rethought about the disappointing box office performance of the 2019 film ‘Doctor Sleep’, which was the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s cult horror film ‘The Shining’. However, as per the report, the senior officials at HBO Max opined that ‘Overlook’ might not be a good fit for them at this time.
Written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown, ‘Overlook’ gets its name from the remote hotel of the same name that featured in ‘The Shining’. The series ostensibly revolves around the untold stories of the famous haunted hotel that is cursed with its horrific history. The show would reportedly comprise ten episodes.
Besides the 1980 movie ‘The Shining’ starring Jack Nicholson and its sequel ‘Doctor Sleep’, there was also a television series also titled ‘The Shining’ that was released in the year 1997. For the unversed, the original novel followed a recovering alcoholic and struggling writer Jack Torrance, who takes up the job as a caretaker of a remotely located hotel named Overlook. He moves to the hotel with his wife and a gifted son, who has a supernatural ability (the shining) which enables him to see the hotel’s dreadful history. The sinister hotel turns Jack into an insane and violent man, and his family has nowhere to run from the person he has become.
