In its latest bid to expand its reach to as many viewers as possible, HBO has just signed a deal with Apple for distribution of its soon-to-be-launched streaming service HBO Max, through Apple’s distribution network.
As per the deal, viewers can access HBO Max on all Apple devices — iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, via the Apple TV app. They can also cast HBO Max on to their TV sets through second/third generation Apple TV models from their Apple devices via AirPlay.
This deal comes in the wake of similar deals with Charter and Alphabet’s YouTube TV that HBO Max signed back some time ago.
HBO Max plans to mop up 75 to 90 million global subscribers worldwide by 2025, with about 50 million of those coming from within the U.S.
The deal also gives HBO subscribers through the App Store a free upgrade to HBO Max, as also to HBO subscribers through Apple TV channels.
In an official statement to the media, WarnerMedia Distribution chief Rich Warren said, “As we prepare for the launch of HBO Max, our focus remains on making it as widely available as possible for customers seeking out this best-in-class streaming experience. The availability to HBO Max across Apple devices is a great addition to our distribution offering and will provide seamless access for millions of customers.”
HBO Max launches in the U.S. on 27th May. It will launch in Latin America and Europe by early 2021. The company has not made any announcement regarding its India launch plans, except conveying that it plans to continue working with HBO’s existing licensing partners for the time being.
