The highly-anticipated HBO Max’s Green Lantern, from executive producer Greg Berlanti, is being “redeveloped”, according to the latest report from The Hollywood Reporter. Under the redevelopment process, the show’s writer Seth-Grahame Smith is no longer attached to the project, who had already penned down an eight-episode season based on Finn Whitrock’s Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine’s Alan Scott. Instead, the series will now focus on John Stewart.
Stewart is one of the most prominent members of the Green Lantern Corps and the second African-American superhero to appear in DC Comics. The character recently headlined Jeff Wamester’s animated feature, Green Lantern: Beware My Power. Black Adam star, Aldis Hodge, voiced the superhero in that one.
THR also disclosed that Whitrock and Irvine are out now. Although, Berlanti has expressed his interest in teaming up with both of these guys in future. In 2021, the show was being fast-tracked and Berlanti was hell-bent on commencing shooting the same year. But now, the show’s production has taken a slow and methodical approach, suiting HBO’s style.
It makes sense why DC is being extra cautious with its upcoming live-action Green Lantern series. Ryan Reynolds’ take on Hal Jordan (one of the Green Lanterns) faced the wrath of both the critics and the audience in 2011. This scenario forced DC and Warner Bros to scrap plans for a sequel. Berlanti co-wrote the film’s joke of a script with Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Goldenberg. Fans do want another messy and chaotic Green Lantern entry.
HBO Max first announced the Green Lantern series in 2019. Berlanti hailed it as “the biggest DC show ever made”. Many insiders revealed that the show had an estimated budget of $120 million, making it one of the most expensive shows ever. Reps from HBO Max, DC, and Berlanti Productions are yet to comment on this matter. Stay tuned for more updates.
