DC’s biggest douchebag is finally getting his solo series. The upcoming Peacemaker instalment is the first-ever DCEU’s official tv show. The wicked mind behind The Suicide Squad, James Gunn, is responsible for creating this wild and action-packed superhero entry. But it makes us wonder why Peacemaker is the one that is getting his spin-off show. Yes, he is a true American patriot. But he is also one of the biggest jerks in the DC universe. Not to mention his mindset of achieving peace at any cost.
Does Peacemaker deserve a solo series? How can he change DCEU forever? Let’s find out!
Who is Peacemaker?
Peacemaker first belonged to Charlton Comics. But sometime later, DC acquired the character along with other Charlton heroes. In 1966, he debuted with the 40th issue of the Fightin’ 5 comic book series. His real name is Christopher Smith. He becomes a true pacifist and lethal mercenary.
The character of Peacemaker doesn’t fit in the category of superheroes. After all, he is not afraid to slaughter anyone. However, the comic book editions of Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-86) shed some light on his upbringing and relationship with his father. One of the volumes shows how cruel his father was to him in his childhood. He was also a Nazi death camp commandant. The entire scenario resulted in his mental illness.
What kind of Peacemaker viewers will see in the series?
The Nazi times are long gone. If we add the environment of our present world, Smith’s father’s Nazi frame of mind doesn’t suit anymore. However, both teaser and trailer have displayed his complicated bond with his father, Auggie Smith. The latter looks disappointed with his son every time he meets him. And Christopher, like a good boy, tries hard to please his inhuman dad. The intricated father-son connection will spice things up in the series.
The latest trailer has shown that the events of The Suicide Squad and Rick Flag’s death are haunting the protagonist. He is starting to develop doubts in his mind regarding his previous ruthless actions. It looks like he is ready to become a shower, not a grower. But it is not clear how much of a shower Peacemaker can become. Will people finally love him? We have to wait for the show to get the answer!
Why Peacemaker deserves his solo show?
James Gunn appeared in an interview with Entertainment Tonight sometime ago. He addressed the matter and stated:
“Well, I think that it’s a number of things. In the movie… Harley gets a really complete story about herself, she gets a complete arc. Bloodsport gets a complete story. Rick Flag gets a complete story. Ratcatcher 2 gets a complete story. They all learn something about themselves — sometimes good things, sometimes bad things — but Peacemaker is a douche and he stays a douche and he’s an asshole in the movie. But I think there’s something below that.”
And guess what? The director is right! The team of the infamous Belle Reeve Penitentiary had Peacemaker in Gunn’s directional Rated-R superhero project this year. We have already seen a lot of Harley Quinn in the DCEU. Rick Flag’s character received proper attention in both Suicide Squad movies. As for Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport, both characters have been explored pretty deeply in the rebooted SS version. But Peacemaker remained a complete idiot in the entire movie. Also, Danielle Brooks’ character in the show, Leota Adebayo, notices that there’s something sad related to Smith’s past. And we strongly believe that his past needs to be delved into.
How Peacemaker can revolutionalise the DCEU?
It looks like we are overemphasizing this thing a bit. Right? Fans have enjoyed innumerable DC shows in the last decade. Some of them were Rated-R as well. But none of them shared a direct relationship with the DC Extended Universe. There was a time when the executives at Warner Bros didn’t know what to do with the superhero franchise. The latter suffered from a bumpy start with Man of Steel followed by a disastrous Batman vs Superman movie. And we are not even going to talk about David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Josstice League crap. But Wonder Woman (2017) and Aquaman (2018) aided in putting the franchise on the right track.
Despite bombing on the box office, Gunn’s SS project has opened a lot of doors for many characters to groom. Especially for Peacemaker. We can expect seamless blood-splashing action infused with countless wild moments in the forthcoming DC entry. It has a golden opportunity to create something unique. Above all, we cannot imagine the members of the Justice League going to extreme lengths to preserve peace other than the douchebag… wait! Yeah, other than the mighty Peacemaker! It’s his show, guys! Come on!
