HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ Season 3 Renewal: A Gift Or A Gamble?

By Binged Bureau - Apr 10, 2025 @ 02:04 pm
HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ Season 3 Renewal: A Gift Or A Gamble?

Emmy Award winning HBO original series ‘The Last Of Us’ is all set to return with season 2 later this week but before that happens the makers have decided on its renewal for a third season. ‘The Last Of Us’ will premiere on 14th April, 2025 on Jio Hotstar in India that is a day after it debuts on HBO and streams on Max overseas.

This renewal for season 3 was imminent as creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann had already planned to split the original game’s sequel ‘The Last Of Us Part ll’ into multiple seasons given its magnitude.

At the same time this early renewal speaks volume about the confidence the makers and HBO have in the series. But the question here is: what does this mean for the future of the show? Is it a bold move that one should be cautious about or is it something to be excited for?

If the makers are to be believed the latter is the most plausible outcome and one must be thriller with this news of renewal. There’s two reasons for it: firstly, season one was a massive hit winning multiple accolades. It was masterfully created capturing the emotional weight of Joel and Ellie’s journey in a post-apocalyptic world. The way it balanced gritty survival with moments of unfiltered humanity was notable. What’s more commendable is that the makers managed to effectively transform the game into a cinematic experience while retaining its soul.

Secondly, as mentioned above, the source material is too rich and has a lot more to offer than what could fit in a single season. The game, ‘The Last Of Us Part ll’, is a sprawling and emotionally complex tale with themes like revenge, redemption, and the cyclical nature of violence that can be easily explored in stretched serialised formats.

Therefore expanding the show across multiple seasons will give it the chance to develop in its entirety and not feel suffocating. It will also let the characters have more nuanced character arcs which will help viewers connect with them more organically.

But then on the other hand early renewals can look hasty and a result of overconfidence as well. The season 2 is yet to premiere and how the larger public perceives is still to be discovered. Few early critic reactions, however good they might be, cannot serve as the ultimate indicator of a show’s real success.

Moreover, the original game on which season 2 of ‘The Last Of Us’ is based itself has certain polarised opinions. While some find it brilliant, some also feel it has bold narrative choices. So how can we be so sure that the same won’t happen with its show adaptation?

If not done right, it could go either ways. Hopefully the makers have been careful in maintaining the quality and emotional intensity in the sequel season because that is what will justify this early third season renewal. Otherwise it would just feel like an appendix rather a natural extension of the story.

Overall, there is a sense of excitement about ‘The Last Of Us’ getting renewed for season three but it comes along with a cautious optimism. Because however ambitious the makers might be, success will come only out of great execution. For now all hopes and expectations are pinned on ‘The Last Of Us’ season 2 which will decide whether this renewal is a gift or a gamble.
