“Heart of the Hunter,” Netflix’s newest addition to the South African slate, is slated to debut on March 29. This onscreen version of Deon Meyer’s novel aims to combine political intrigue with the high stakes world of a retired assassin, riding the tide of the streaming giant’s surge in the region. Even though it has the makings of an exciting thriller, the execution is sadly inadequate.
The plot, which revolves around a retired assassin called back into duty to expose a deadly plot within the South African government, is a cliche that viewers have seen countless times. Though genre mainstays, the one-man quest and government intrigue clichés lack the originality required to pique the interest of a discriminating viewer.
Rather from being a ground-breaking addition, “Heart of the Hunter” feels more like a checkmark on a list as Netflix attempts to establish itself in the South African market. The issue of whether this will be the streaming behemoth’s victorious foray into South African storytelling or merely another forgettable addition to their ever-expanding collection hangs over the release date of March 29. If “Heart of the Hunter” can make a difference under the shadows of Netflix’s big regional push, only time will tell.
