It has been known for quite some time that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is working on a grand project for Netflix and will be turning it into a series. Now, it looks like everything is put to rest as Netflix India announces their first ever association with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the upcoming project titled “Heeramandi”. The poster that dropped along with the announcement, itself oozes grandiosity in every sense and one will definitely stay intrigued with what it has to offer.
As for the series, it is set in the pre-Independence era in Heeramandi, before the partition. Heeramandi right now is situated in Lahore, present day Pakistan. The series will follow the lives of courtesans and how Heeramandi was famous for it back then. The series will put Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s larger than life set, grand decor in use for the project to make it royal in every sense possible. The series will show the lives of these courtesans, and how even when people looked down upon them, they lived lives that were nothing less than that of a queen.

The story encompasses three generations of courtesans and the way they have struggled to stay in Heeramandi over the decades. As per Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s words go, this is one project that he holds dear. It has been 14 years in making, forming and researching this story. This is an absolute dream project of his and with Netflix bringing it to life, it cannot get any bigger. The series will definitely focus on the courteasans, but besides that it will also take a peek into a world that was filled with betrayals, deceivers, love, successions and also politics in a community like that of “Heeramandi”. It will be a story that will take back people to a beautiful era, that was filled with so many brilliant, beautiful things, but also harshness, hatred at the same time.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the man who has brought about projects like Devdas, Bajirao Mastani, Ram Leela, Padmavaat and so many more and just by the names of these films, we know what the filmmaker is capable of. He in his past interviews have mentioned about “Heeramandi” and said, how this project has taken a significant time, which was absolutely necessary since the project is set on such a large scale. Definitely both Netflix and Bhansali are ready to bring on this epic saga of amazing, never before explored stories pretty soon, but that definitely will take some time now.
Even though Netflix has announced the series, it hasn’t revealed any kind of release dates at the moment. It is quite evident that it might take a little bit of more time before it is officially out.
