If you are a fan of Psychological dramas, here is a nice recommendation for you. There are some very well written movies made in Bengali in the last few years. Aditya Vikram Sengupta is one of the directors who has made the Bengali film insutry go beyond its stillness of mindless films.
‘Jonaki’ is written and directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta and stars actors like Lolita Chatterjee, Jim Sarbh, Ratnabali Bhattacharjee and Sumanto Chattopadhyay.
The film tells the story of an octogenarian lady named Jonaki who is in a comatose state now and tries to find love once more. She flashes back to all her memories of her life, which is portrayed through surrealistic imagery in the film. She is in her deathbed and her lover, who is old now comes back to the world that she is living behind. The film revisits the separation of Jonaki from her lover. But it is not about the plot of the film. It is about how you feel while watching it. It is an one time experience and Aditya Vikram has put his heart and soul into the movie.
‘Jonaki’ follows the logic of dreams and it is highly surreal in nature, like people vanishing after a point to imply their leaving. The music is composed by Alexander Zekke and the cinematography is handled by Mahendra Shetty and Aditya himself. The film was screened at many international film festivals and won many awards too. Lolita Chatterjee as Jonaki and Jim Sarbh as her lover have given extraordinary performances in the film.
Jonaki is one of a kind and there are very few films of this nature. It is made for a very select audience and to them it relates hard. Watch it if you are a fan of art films or Bengali films as a whole. It is available to watch on Netflix.
