If you closely follow the Bengali film industry you would not doubt the genius of Koushik Ganguly. He is definitely the most trusted director of this time in the industry and he has elevated cinema to new heights with his novel storytelling style.
‘Jyesthoputro’ is one such movie. It came out in 2019 and was accepted by the audiences with love. The film is written and directed by Koushik Ganguly and stars Prasenjit Chatterjee and Ritwick Chakroborty in the lead roles. Actors like Gargi Roychowdhury, Sudipta Chakraborty, Daminee Benny Basu, Shreya Bhattacharya and Pradeep Bhattacharya are in other important roles. The actors have done a tremendous job and the subtle and minimalistic acting of Ritwick deserves a special mention. The film is available to watch on Zee5.
‘Jyesthoputro’ means ‘the elder son’, the film tells the story of two brothers. Indrajit, the elder one is a huge superstar and he comes back to his native village after hearing of his father’s death. The younger brother Partho is a bit jealous and sad that even in a mourning ceremony, Indrajit is flocked by fans for selfies and autographs. Indrajit presides over all the funeral ceremony and at the night Partho reveals to him what he thinks about him. In a drunken state, he tells Indrajit that he himself is the real ‘Jyesthoputro’ as he took care of his father in his old age and he should be given all the rights for his funeral and Shradhho.
The music of the film is given by Prabuddha Banerjee and the cinematography is handled by Sirsha Ray. The film went on to win two National Awards that year, one for best original screenplay and one for best background score.
