Netflix has announced a remake of Tony Scott’s 2004 thriller, Man on Fire, which itself took inspiration from A. J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel. The movie starred Denzel Washington as John Creasy, a dejected, alcoholic former CIA officer turned bodyguard, who goes on a rampage after his charge, Lupita “Pita” Ramos (played by Dakota Fanning), gets kidnapped in Mexico City. For the Netflix remake, we have Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Creasy.
Tony Scott’s Man on Fire was far from being called a perfect film. But it was entertaining as hell. Some critics found the movie too dark and violent. But they unanimously praised Washington’s take on Creasy. The actor’s chemistry with young Dakota Fanning was praised as well. The first half builds a strong emotional connection between Creasy and Pita, which is gradually eroded as the story progresses into a relentlessly explosive action film. Although, the movie treasures one of the best acting performances of Washington’s career.
Netflix can improve its upcoming series adaptation of Scott’s Man on Fire in many ways. Delving deeper into Creasy’s inner demons and exploring his troubled past could offer a richer understanding of the character. Plus, the show needs to have more light-hearted moments. They will strengthen the protagonist’s connection with Pita and help him give a new meaning to his life. The action sequences need to be even more thrilling.
But most importantly, it all comes down to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. His performance needs to add real emotion to Creasy’s journey. Denzel Washington’s performance in Scott’s 2004 movie was so compelling that he single-handedly elevated his character beyond a typical action hero, and for fans of the original, Yahya must achieve a similar feat.
