Although official confirmation is still awaited, the brand-new OTT platform following the much talked about Jio Cinema – Voot Select merger will most likely be called JioVoot. And whenever it’s launched in the near future, it can potentially disrupt the Indian OTT market in a big way. Firstly because of its massive content and secondly because of the way the subscription plans are ostensibly being priced.
One of the subscription plans for the new JioVoot streaming platform – the ingeniously and aggressively priced Rs.2/- per day plan, is bound to sell like hot cakes among the price sensitive and entertainment content loving Indian OTT viewers.
So, it’s high time that other established Indian OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and SonyLIV, etc. gear up for some cut-throat competition from the upcoming potential biggie JioVoot.
As of now in India, no streaming platform is offering an OTT subscription plan which is similar to the Rs.2/- per day plan. But now is the time for Indian streaming services to reevaluate their plans and their pricing strategy.
To counter JioVoot’s extremely competitive and innovative subscription plans in the future, rival Indian OTT platforms can probably launch a “weekend binge-watch” plan through which they can offer their subscribers OTT content on a weekend-only basis. Because a significant segment of price conscious streaming audiences has the habit of consuming OTT content during the weekends because they simply don’t have the time to watch it during weekdays.
For instance, currently, Netflix India has a mobile-only plan at the cost of Rs.149/- per month. Now, the OTT giant can introduce a mobile-only weekend binge-watch plan which will provide users access to its content during the weekend, that is, from Friday to Sunday. The pricing for this potential weekend binge-watch plan can be made competitive like that of JioVoot and it can also be extended to other Netflix subscription brackets also.
Because if rival Indian OTT platforms are not proactive and do not brace themselves and plan in advance for the widespread impact after JioVoot’s launch, then they might be in for an unpleasant shock later. The above-mentioned weekend-only binge-watch plan could be one way to counter JioVoot’s plans. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, SonyLIV and other OTT platforms – it’s time to pull up your socks and start thinking out of the box because JioVoot is coming soon!
