Here’s How ‘The Social Network’ Sequel By David Fincher Could Work

Here’s How ‘The Social Network’ Sequel By David Fincher Could Work

David Fincher’s ‘The Social Network’ sequel could actually work. However, The Killer director has mixed feelings about this scenario.

Fincher recently had a conversation with The Guardian while promoting his upcoming collaboration with Michael Fassbender, The Killer. On being asked about a potential sequel to his 2010 masterpiece, this is what he said:

“Aaron [Sorkin], The Social Network’s screenwriter] and I have talked about it, but, um… that’s a can of worms.”

The Social Network was a massive critical and commercial success, earning over $220 million at the global box office. The biographical drama helped strengthen the careers of Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield in Hollywood. It also bagged three Oscars at the 83rd Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Here comes the main question: Will a sequel to ‘The Social Network’ work? Well, it can! Let’s look at everything that has happened with Mark Zuckerberg and his darling ‘Facebook’ after 2010. We will find many intriguing and controversial stories related to him and his company.

The sequel can briefly focus on Facebook (FB), now META, going public with its IPO in May 2012. At that time, the social networking giant had one of the largest tech IPOs in the world. It can also explore Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram (2012) and WhatsApp (2014). The latter’s acquisition was valued at $19 billion, making it one of the largest tech acquisitions during that time.

In addition, the second part should definitely explore the infamous data scandal between Facebook and Cambridge Analytica. The latter was a British consulting firm that collected the personal information and data of millions of Facebook users in the early 2010s without their permission. The firm primarily used that data to support its political advertising initiatives. One of the former employees of Cambridge Analytica, Christopher Wylie, disclosed this scenario. As a result, Zuckerberg was forced to testify in front of Congress, and the US Federal Trade Commission fined Facebook $5 billion.

Before getting rebranded as Meta, Facebook faced heavy criticism over its handling of privacy issues, antitrust investigations, lawsuits, controversies associated with political advertisements, and more. All these stories could make ‘The Social Network’ sequel better than the 2010 film. Will David Fincher collaborate with Aaron Sorkin again for the sophomore entry? Only time will tell us.

Stream David Fincher’s The Social Network on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
