Celebrating Disney’s 100th anniversary, ‘Wish’, the upcoming animated musical fantasy flick from the studio, is less than a week away from arriving in theatres globally. Will the beloved animated storyteller hit the ball out of the park with the forthcoming Ariana DeBose starrer? Or are we looking at another box office bomb from the studio?
Disney’s habit of investing way too heavily in its animated projects has led towards its downfall in recent times. Projects like Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, and Strange World tanked horribly at the global box office. The studio’s animation department has yet to find a financially successful project after Frozen II, which arrived in 2019. This scenario certainly makes things a lot more difficult for ‘Wish’, which reportedly has a substantial budget of $200 million.
Even many of the latest Pixar films, such as Onward, Luca, Soul, Turning Red, Lightyear, and Elemental, failed to bring in immense profits for Disney during their respective theatrical runs. There is no denying that the studio has lost its footing after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early estimations from Box Office Pro have disclosed that ‘Wish’ may get a decent opening of $45-65 million in its opening domestic weekend. This scenario looks modestly strong as it gives Disney a golden opportunity to get the best opening for an original animated project after Coco (2017). The film’s overall domestic collection could reach up to $185-285 million. However, a lot depends upon its foreign collections as well. It means that ‘Wish’ needs to collect over $600-650 million globally to turn into a big financial success. Given the box office performances of the recent Disney animated releases, achieving this feat would be nothing short of a miracle for the studio.
Helmed by the duo of Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, ‘Wish’ stars Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Evan Peters, and many more talents. Stay tuned for more updates.
