Amazon Prime Video’s highly anticipated sci-fi spy series ‘Citadel’ is on the verge of becoming the second most expensive show ever produced. Why? Because, as per a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, the seven-part series has undergone a major creative overhaul due to which its previous reported budget of $160 million has now swelled up to over a whopping $200 million after an addition of $75 million dollars owing to reshoots.
The reshoots happened earlier ostensibly because of creative differences which led to the departure of multiple members of the creative team. As per the report, the difference of opinion happened after Amazon had “some reservations about early footage” for the show after filming concluded in December last year. Thereafter, one of the showrunners Josh Appelbaum along with director Brian Kirk and others exited the show.
The aforementioned creative overhaul has apparently made Prime Video’s ‘Citadel’ the second most expensive show after the OTT giant’s massively mounted fantasy series ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, which has started streaming from today. While ‘Citadel’ is currently in the post-production stage.
The mothership ‘Citadel’ series will be led by Scottish actor Richard Madden (‘Bodyguard’, ‘Game of Thrones’) and Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas (‘The White Tiger’, ‘Quantico’, ‘Mary Kom’). ‘The Lovely Bones’ actor Stanley Tucci is also part of the project. Madden plays the role of Citadel agent Mason Kane, an amnesiac who does not remember his previous life.
Other than the main ‘Citadel’ series, there are going to be multiple spin-offs set in India, Italy, Spain, and Mexico. The Indian version is being helmed by Raj & DK of ‘The Family Man’ fame and features Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead roles.
