We are nearly over a month away from getting Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in theatres worldwide. Despite serving as a sequel to Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), ‘Kingdom’ feels like a new film. It should be its own thing instead of relying heavily on its predecessors. Here’s why!
The promotional clips for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes looked great and impressed many of the franchise’s fans. All of them teased that the upcoming Wes Ball directional would be different from the previous three ‘Apes’ films. And it is good for ‘Kingdom’ as well as for the overall franchise. ‘War’ concluded Caesar’s arc in the most epic and satisfying manner possible, thanks to Matt Reeves. But the franchise cannot rely on Andy Serkis’ Caesar forever. It needs a new protagonist to take the boat forward. Based on the trailers, it seems like Noa (Owen Teague) will lead ‘Kingdom’. Many fans believed that Caesar’s son, Cornelius, might lead the franchise after his father’s death. But we have a totally different character, Noa, as the protagonist.
Another thing that makes Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes different from previous entries of the rebooted trilogy is its setting. The movie’s events take place 300 years after the 2017 film. It looks more akin to the original ‘Apes’ movies in terms of plot, given that Apes have become the most dominant beings on Earth. Their rise resulted in humanity’s fall, forcing the latter to live like animals. This scenario makes ‘Kingdom’ different from the previous ‘Apes’ films. In other words, we can say that ‘Kingdom’ feels like a tribute to the original films instead of sharing close connections with Caesar’s arc, a scenario that sounds fresh and exciting.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will come out in theatres worldwide on May 10. It stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and more. Stay tuned for more updates.
