Disney+ Hotstar confuses and amazes at the same time with its unique choice of content. When you look at the licensed content and content from South India, it’s actually pretty great, but when it comes to their original Hindi content something’s literally off with Disney+ Hotstar these days.
For example, Disney+ Hotstar recently acquired films like ‘All We Imagine As Light’, ‘Bagheera’, ‘Sookshmadarshini’, ‘ Kill’, ‘Munjya’, ‘Kishkindhaa Kaandam’, ‘ARM’, and more. Each of these titles have received huge acclaim and are also commercially successful, eventually turning out to be superb profitable ventures for the platform.
In contrast, let’s have a look at some of the recent Hindi original content from Disney+ Hotstar, ‘Gunaah’, ‘Reeta Sanyal’, ‘Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar’, ‘Life Hill Gayi’, and ‘Commander Karan Saxena’ among others. One cannot ignore the poor quality production value of these shows that are also super cringe story wise. Infact their upcoming show ‘Power of Paanch’ falls in this same category.
It’s not like Disney+ Hotstar hasn’t given us good Hindi shows before. We have had ‘Criminal Justice’, ‘Aarya’, ‘Special Ops’, ‘The Night Manager’, ‘Ghar Wapsi’, ‘The Legend of Hanuman’ and many more. But in the recent past their focus has shifted more towards licensed content with little to no attention towards Hindi originals.
This is one aspect Disney+ Hotstar should really look into if they wish to cater to a broader Indian audience and stay in competition with its peers who give equal importance to both licensed and original library from both regional and Hindi content.
