This week, we are going all the way to the middle east to find a “Hidden Gem”. ‘Shtisel‘ is an Israeli web series that is currently streaming on Netflix. The third season of the Hebrew language series dropped earlier this year on March 25th 2021. There are 33 episodes in total currently available for streaming so check it out, if you like unique stories.
‘Shtisel’ is a unique web series that is set from the point of view of a father and his adult son practicing Haredi Judaism. They both live together in a small house, practicing an ultra orthodox life-style as is demanded by their faith. They live in a more secular community in the Geula, Jerusalem and the characters within the series often compares their “liberal” lifestyle to their adjacent town, Mea She’arm, which is known for its religious fundamentalism.
The father from the web series is called Shulem and his son is called Akiva. It has been sometime since Shulem’s wife passed and the time has come for Akiva to get married (as per custom). While searching for a woman, Akiva gets attracted to a slightly older woman, Elisheva. Akiva wants to marry this woman, but Shulem is against this union because she is divorced and has a son from a previous marriage. The series also takes a turn when Shulem decides to remarry.
A unique story coming from the most unexpected of places is an apt summary for ‘Shtisel‘. This web series might not be all that well known but it has received rave reviews from critics and viewers alike. The TV series first dropped on the Israeli network, yes Oh, before making its way to Netflix. Check out the trailer for this aforementioned series below:
