For this week’s “Hidden Gems” entry, we will take a look at a forgotten single-season series that got cancelled by Netflix last year, called ‘Giri/Haji‘. The BBC Two Show likely got cancelled from both the network and streaming platform due to the problems that arose from the coronavirus pandemic. Hopefully, with time, the show will be able to pick up where it left off, at the end of it’s first season.
So, what is Giri/Haji?
Giri means Honour and Haji means Shame in Japanese. The dual lingual web series is primarily set in London, where a Japanese cop, Kenzo, comes to the English capital to find his supposedly deceased younger brother, Yuto. Yuto is accused of killing the nephew of a prominent Yakuza member, so Kenzo wants to see if his younger brother is guilty of the crime as well. With the help of a cop, DC Sarah Weitzmann of the Metropolitan Police and a young sex worker, Rodney Yamaguchi – Kenzo ventures into London’s underbelly searching for his brother.
Like most shows that feature Yakuza, the series is quite violent and bloody, so this is a warning for people who do not like the sight of blood and guts.
Still, the show is quite spectacular and known for its brilliant sense of humour within a near-perfect crime thriller series. The show of “two worlds” boasts an ensemble cast that features Takehiro Hira, Kelly Macdonald, Yōsuke Kubozuka, Will Sharpe, Masahiro Motoki, Justin Long, Anna Sawai, and Charlie Creed-Miles. The thriller action drama series has earned multiple positive reviews over the years and it deserves much more recognition.
Giri/Haji is currently streaming on Netflix – so check it out!
