The official Hindi remake of hit Malayalam language Film ‘Ishq Not a Love Story’ has been silently creating ripples on Netflix India for a week now. Well yes! We are talking about ‘Operation Romeo’ (2022). The film theatrically released on 22nd April and began streaming on Netflix India from July 3rd.
Although there was little to no noise from Netflix India‘s end about the streaming release of the film, it seems like the audience still bothered to watch it. This is why clearly Operation Romeo has been trending at #5 on the Top 10 list (overall) in Netflix India despite not having “stars” as main leads. The film was not really well received unlike the original. It was a colossal disaster at the box-office. The critical reception wasn’t good enough either. Critics opined that performances were disappointing despite a decent premise.
Two of the major selling points of the original was Shane Nigam-Shine Tom Chacko’s performances and Shane Nigam-Ann Sheetal’s chemistry. The film was also appreciated for its genre bending climax. Regardless of the fact that the hindi remake fell flat on all of these departments, the film is still grabbing eye-balls on Netflix India probably owing to lack of any fresh hindi release last week besides Major. Instead of acquiring hindi remake of Ishq, Netflix could have easily acquired the original which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime India.
Operation Romeo is directed by Shashant Shah and produced by Shital Bhatia and Neeraj Pandey under the banner of Friday Filmworks and Plan C Studios. The film stars Sidhant Gupta, Vedika Pinto, Sharad Kelkar, Bhumika Chawla and Kishor Kadam. The film’s music was composed by MM Keeravani and its lyrics written by Muntashir.
