Soon after the much hyped Oscar Sweep of Parasite, movie fanatics were overjoyed when Oscar Nominee and Japanese auteur Hirokazu Koreeda announced his next film “Broker” (then titled “Baby,Box, Broker”) after his Oscar nominated and Palm D’or winner “Shoplifters” and French film “The Truth” (2019) with popular South Korean actors Song Kang Ho (Memories of Murder, JSA, Thirst, Parasite ) and Bae Doona (Sense 8, Kingdom, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, The Host).
Since the date of announcement in August 2020, the film is one of the most anticipated films Internationally for movie fanatics world-wide and for fans of the Japanese Director. With a potential World Premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival, the film is eyeing for a June release in South Korea.
Unlike the Director’s earlier films that were set in Japan, Broker is said to be a throughout South Korean Film set in South Korea. It marks Koreeda’s second film after The Truth (2019) set outside of Japan and also Actor Bae Doona‘s collaboration with Koreeda after Air Doll (2009).
However very little is known about the plot of the film. Vaguely, the film revolves around characters associated with baby boxes, that allows infants to be dropped off anonymously abandoned by their parents.
Besides Bae Doona who plays Soo-jin and Song Kang Ho who plays Sang Hyeon, the film also stars popular South Korean actors like Gang Dong Won, IU and Lee Joo-young playing Dong Soo, So Young and Detective Lee respectively. If you know about Hirokazu Koreeda and his impeccable filmography, you’d know that the film is going to break your tear-ducts mercilessly. Although June is too far and we do not have a clear release date yet, we might get reviews from the Cannes premiere in the last week of May.
