American actress Alicia Silverstone cemented herself as a teen icon with her iconic portrayal of Cher Horowitz in the 1995 rom-com ‘Clueless’. Since then, she has gone on to star in fan-favorite titles like ‘The Crush’, ‘Reptile’, The Babysitter’, ‘Blast from the Past’, ‘Batman and Robin’, and more.
On top of all that, one of her most recent features is categorized in the ‘holiday-gone-horribly-wrong’ genre. Released in 2022, ‘The Requin’ stars Silverstone and James Tupper in leading roles. The plot follows a couple Jaelyn and Kyle as they travel to a remote seaside villa in Vietnam for a romantic getaway. In the aftermath of a torrential storm, their villa is reduced to a little more than a raft.
Spoiled cherry on top: another danger suddenly appears! The stranded couple is now surrounded by a school of great white sharks. With her injured husband watching helplessly, Jaelyn battles the deadly predators alone. Although the man-versus-wild element of the film could have made for a captivating watch, bland cinematography, and poor CGI ruin the film.
Moreover, the movie was also a major letdown considering the buzz it generated, owing to Silverstone and renowned Vietnamese director Le-Van Kiet. Despite that, it is all set to stream on Lionsgate Play from August 2024.
Catch the film (or not) to find out whether (or not) it is worth a watch despite the reviews.
