Now, from a survey by US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the datas show that Asian Americans earns 30% more than Non Asian Americans, but spends 35% less on media, according to McKinsey, Asian Americans earns a lot of money but they don’t invest it on media, as there is always stereotypical representation of Asians in Hollywood, so if there was a better portrayal then the probability says that they will invest more.
With Mr. Yunioshi, Apu, and Long Duk Dong, the representation of Asians in movies and series were very stereotypical, but the new wave of change is trying to eradicate the stereotype. With movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Parasite and TV series like Beef and Squid Game, which have won many awards making actors like Dwayne Johnson, Taika Waititi, and Mindy Kaling an A-list artist.
Between 2002 and 2022, API representation in film rose from 3 to 20 percent, but mostly the increase was made in movies which were made outside the US and the same goes for TV. Asian Americans are 6.2% of the US population, but we only see 3.4% of lead roles in US movies, which means it doesn’t show the situation of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the US completely.
API representation in movies is heavily skewed towards action-adventure genres, which generally grossed $50 million. The movies with API leads tend to be increasingly race-agnostic. Between the years 2018 and 2022, 76% of American movies in limited theatrical release with at least one API lead were considered race-specific.
The McKinsey authors wrote about the improvement of representation on and off screen is , “The reward for getting it right could create real impact for the industry — and the prize will only grow. Progress may not be easy, but when the enhanced richness of storytelling is accompanied by a multibillion-dollar opportunity, the business case is clear.”
