Comic books have been perennial sources of joy for lovers of action, thrill, suspense and drama. Almost every comic book is full of such stories that have all the above elements into a well-structured, readable and enjoyable narrative. But Indian filmmakers have hardly leveraged these imaginative creations to adapt to the screen.
Quite unlike Hollywood, which has a factory of blockbusters, churning out magnificent movies and series on superhero comics of various creators. Marvel and DC Comics are two of the better known such franchises. The Witcher, Locke And Key, Riverdale, Castlevania, The Chronicles Of Narnia, The Mask, Wimpy Kid, Watchmen, are just the tip of the iceberg in the sea of Hollywood comic book adaptations.
But now, in a heartening development for Indian comic book creators, Shamik Dasgupta’s 2013 comic book, The Caravan, is being turned into a multi-season web series. The Caravan is a comic book in the horror and suspense genre, with loads of masala in the story. It is hence web series material.
The web series will be jointly produced by producer Vivek Rangachari of DAR Motion Pictures and Asvin Srivatsangam of Yali Dream Creations, the original publishers of the book. Vivek Rangachari has earlier produced well received movies such as D-Day and The Lunchbox. This will be his first foray into the OTT space. Talks are on with major streaming platforms to stream the web series based on The Caravan.
Shamik Dasgupta’s other works, Rakshak and The Village, have also been picked up for screen adaptation; the former by Sanjay Gupta, for a feature film starring John Abraham; and the latter, by Mani Ratnam’s former assistant, for a web series in the Tamil language.
