The Hotstar original ‘Jhansi‘ is now streaming in seven Indian languages. You can watch it in Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and for a change Marathi and Bengali too.
Most Indian movies and web series usually stream in the five mostly spoken languages that are Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Dubbing is a time taking and effortful process and Disney+Hotstar taking the decision to dub its shows in more languages with authenticity shows the platform’s ambition for a bigger viewer base.
Another Hotstar special, Parampara, that is a Telugu series originally is also available in Bengali and Marathi. The new series ‘November Story’ starring Tamannah Bhatia also has audios in Bengali and Marathi.
The Hollywood and Korean series are usually dubbed mostly in Hindi and very few of them are available in more audios. It always revolves in the 5 major languages. But there is a large audience that still wants the shows and movies in the languages that they are comfortable in. Watching something for entertainment with subtitles is not everybody’s cup of tea. Disney+Hotstar taking steps for making shows available in more regional languages is a great news.
Previously Aashram had given the opportunity of experiencing the series in the native language of Bengali and also Punjabi people. Aashram is a MX Player original and it has a huge fanbase, its third season is one of the most anticipated shows in India right now.
This is a change in a positive direction and hopefully Hotstar will pave the way for more comfortable binge watching for audiences and more platforms will follow its example.
