Given the explosive climax of Season 1, “House of the Dragon” fans expected a similarly action-packed Season 2 premiere. However, the premiere episode focused on setting the stage for a brutal civil war between the Hightowers and the Targaryens. We saw Rhaenyra mourning Lucerys, Daemon plotting revenge against Aemond, the shocking demise of Jaehaerys, and more. But the question on everyone’s mind remains: what’s going on between Queen Alicent Hightower and Ser Criston Cole?
“House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal also discussed the brewing romance between Alicent and Cole in his recent interview with Collider. This is what he said:
“Are they comfortable with each other? It feels very awkward there. They’re literally talking about the weather. So, that’s the thing, it’s a brand new relationship. We don’t specifically get into, intentionally, when and where it started. Part of that is the fun of leaving it up to interpretation by the viewing audience. But it’s certainly a new thing, a new romance.”
The romantic connection between Alicent and Criston Cole is intriguing to watch, especially given her loveless marriage to the much older Viserys. Both were emotionally connected but there was no sign of romantic intimacy. On the other hand, Alicent’s connection with Criston Cole seems to be brimmed with romantic intimacy. However, a lack of emotional intimacy is clearly visible between the two.
For some time Criston and Alicent were able to keep their relationship a secret. However, this all changed after Helaena watched them together on a bed during the final moments of Episode 1. Helaena wanted to visit Alicent to inform her about Jaehaerys’ death. She is the only person who knows how intimate the relationship between Criston and Alicent is. But we shouldn’t expect her to tell everyone about this scandalous situation.
The civil war escalates with each passing day, casting a shadow over every relationship in King’s Landing and Dragonstone. Will Alicent and Criston’s bond, forged in loyalty, find a place amidst the growing conflict? Is there a deeper love hidden beneath the surface, or will their connection crumble under the weight of war? Find out in the upcoming episodes of House of the Dragon Season 2 on JioCinema.
