Game of Thrones is undoubtedly one of the best productions for television. The decision to create spin-offs from the main franchise has proven to be a good one, receiving positive remarks from fans and strong ratings.
The first season of House of the Dragon has a 93% rating on the Tomatometer and 82% audience rating.
As the second season approaches, it is receiving similar acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show currently has 31 reviews and holds a 90% rating on the Tomatometer.
Though the show’s rating is strong, the reviews evoke mixed emotions. The show has its strengths, including a longer runtime (most episodes this season are close to an hour, with some exceeding it).
It focuses a lot on character development. Unlike Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon doesn’t follow an annual season format. The longer production period benefits the series, but whether it will crumble or become a precious diamond under pressure remains to be seen.
Regarding the reviews, here are some responses:
Joy Press from Vanity Fair stated, “The show’s second outing is both more cohesive and more disappointing… Luckily, season two has strong performances from Cooke and D’Arcy to propel it forward.”
Brian Lowry from CNN noted, “After a somewhat rocky takeoff, House of the Dragon has seemingly reached its cruising altitude, while continuing to take big creative swings.”
Rachel Leishman from The Mary Sue said, “Season 2 really benefits from the series spending a lot more time in one period of these characters’ lives. Instead of jumping around and hoping the audience keeps up, we get to see what death and pain look like for each of them.”
