Atrangi Re released on Disney+Hotstar on the occasion of Christmas Eve. Established industry critics gave highly positive reviews to the film, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Because films as cringeworthy as Satyameva Jayate 2 also managed to earn positive reviews.
The audience has kind of shifted who they trust for honest reviews. They turn towards websites and YouTube channels that came into existence after the boom of the internet era.
Even there, Atrangi Re received applause for its overall vision and its unique concept. But the execution part of the film received not so positive response from them. Everything apart from Dhanush’s performance received criticism.
Those criticisms are absolutely true and there are multiple issues with the execution of the film. There are a lot of plotholes and sometimes the film goes completely illogical; thanks to the poor screenplay.
The pace through which Dr Madhusudan and Vishu deduce the mental condition of Rinku is terribly written. Even Sherlock Holmes would take a little time to guess who Sajjad actually was.
Even the most popular antacid in India claims to take 6 seconds to start their job. But the medicine Madhu gives to Rinku starts showing visible effects within half a second. It is baffling and ridiculous.
Let alone the distance between Tamil Nadu and Delhi that was covered by a bus overnight. There are a lot of things that are terribly wrong with the screenplay.
Even after that, Atrangi Re became the “most-watched” film on Disney+Hotstar on an opening day. Even the head of content Gaurav Banerjee gave a long statement on this success.
So the biggest question is, how did the film do this magic?
The answer is pretty simple. There can be two approaches one can watch this film. One is to believe in the vision of Anand L Rai and get lost in a beautiful story.
Another is to focus too much on trivial details that will stop you from enjoying the film. Generally, the audience does not watch a film to find out its error or even plot holes on an intentional basis.
Sometimes they become too prominent that even the audience sees them without making any effort and the film comes out to be cringe.
But Atrangi Re is definitely not like that. It features an extremely beautiful album that is composed by the maestro AR Rahman and penned by Irshad Kamil. The two have given some immensely memorable albums like Rockstar, Highway, Tamasha and Ranjhana. Although this album is not even close to what we can expect from AR Rahman, it is still a great album according to 2021 standards.
The biggest decoration of this film however is Dhanush’s acting that even overpowers the poor performance of Sara Ali Khan in a major portion of the second half.
Quite obviously, Akshay Kumar helped to attract an audience and of course its unique love story.
The audience definitely enjoyed this film even after so many problems. Thanks to the concept and Dhanush for making it enjoyable. And hands down to the musical aspects.
