These terms such as “mass”, blockbuster and whatnot are very very new. However, the Hindi film industry is much older. For that matter, Amitabh Bachchan is one of the greatest cinema icons to ever walk on Earth and more than being a great actor, he was a box office giant.
He has given numerous hits that are even difficult to imagine for today’s generation. But, it all stopped after the mid-80s. Not that Bachchan stopped being a good actor but the Hindi film industry was plagued by a dark age after the mid 80s which also sucked the career of Amitabh Bachchan. He appeared in some important films like Hum and Agneepath but the box office charm was not the same as his prime days.
After Mohabbatein, he made a second start in his career and the rest is history. He became someone who can never be replicated in history.
After achieving every possible thing a cinema star can possibly do, we saw Kalki 2898 AD on the big screens last week. We wonder how much potential Bachchan still has at the age of 80 and Bollywood isn’t exploring them.
Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Mammootty have also been working for several decades. But their magnanimous star power and box office pull remain as it is. The same can’t be said about Bachchan.
On his own terms, it would be extremely difficult for Bachchan to pull a 200-crore movie. We are very sure that it is not the fault of Bachchan as a star but Bollywood as an industry that failed to fully tap Amitabh Bachchan’s potential as an action star.
Enough of researching those classics from the 70s, we definitely want more and more films like Kalki 2898 AD where Bachchan is just being the Angry Giant Man.
