The seriousness of stories about atrocities against women in the film industry is getting rampant day by day. Several actors and technicians have raised their previous issues which are yet to be found fake or true due to its sensitivity and requirement of efficient law & order machinery.
The voice of women actors and technicians in the Kannada film industry is a hot topic now, after its move by the Karnataka State Commission for Women to set up a PoSH committee and along with the efforts by an independent collective called Film Industry for Rights and Equality (FIRE) which is hoped to have a significant change. Recently, a novel Internal Committee (I.C.) has been constructed by the Malayalam film industry that is expected to have a desirable and positive change.
The industry’s MeToo movement, which tends to address stories of sexual harassment, underscores the need for boundaries and change in the mindset of influential producers and directors. Lending the words from a popular Kannada actor to what she said- “Ask any woman who has acted in Kannada films. They will have a story of harassment to tell. Those who think they can act without accountability need to learn boundaries”.
Subsequently, another Kannada actor reported about the connivance and floccinaucinihilipilificating of addressed complaints by its concerned authorities. Also, the chamber didn’t allow the ‘FIRE’ to speak about the matter.
However, N. M. Suresh, the chairman of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) responded by stating that the film chamber was the mother body and any complaints could be addressed directly to them. Also, the community might be trying to defame the industry. Along with this, the chamber is never interested in an organization like ‘FIRE’ which may be contradictory to democracy.
