Hulu has announced the release date of the second season of its hit show – Only Murders In The Building. Season 1 of the show was widely appreciated and remains one of the best comedy dramas of 2021. Season 1 of the show premiered on August 31 of last year. However, the Arconian’s are scheduled to return earlier than August this year – the premiere of the second season is set for June 28. We may not know the reason for the show makers to choose this date but it is now bound to help its first season at the Emmy awards. But how?
The show follows an episodic release format. With the premier set to drop on June 28, the show will run until August (assuming it has at least eight episodes like the first season). The Emmy nominations are set to be announced on July 12. Season 1 of the show is almost guaranteed nominations across categories. With voting for the nominees set to be open till August 29, new episodes of season 2 dropping around that period is a sure way to ensure the buzz around the show remains high.
Assuming season 2 of the show has a positive response as well, it will help in retaining the brand in the minds of the voters of Emmy Awards. The heightened buzz that usually follows when a new episode of a show drops will lead to more awareness of the show. This could also lead to negative comments if the second season of the show disappoints. However, its impact on how voters perceive season 1 should remain limited given its high quality.
A similar strategy was adopted last year by another frontrunner at the Emmys – Ted Lasso. Ted Lasso released its second season in July, weeks before voting for Emmys started where its first season was heavily nominated. It eventually went on to win the Emmy Award for Best Comedy in 2021.
The makers of Only Murders are banking on a similar output. Whether the show finally wins or not depends on how voters find the show in comparison to other prospective nominees. But creating a buzz with a smartly timed release of its sophomore season should fire up its chances.
Season 1 of Only Murders In The Building is available to stream on Disney+Hotstar in India.
