The unexpected surge in the Malayalam film industry during February and March has caught the attention of industry insiders, surprising even the most seasoned players. Historically, February has been considered a challenging month for film releases in Kerala, with concerns about audience engagement amidst exam season prevailing among moviemakers.
However, the landscape shifted dramatically with the release of two films, Aavesham and Varshangalkku Shesham, during the Eid-Vishu festive period in April. Both films have surpassed expectations, collectively grossing ₹50 crore worldwide since their release on April 11. In Kerala alone, Aavesham, starring Fahadh Faasil, raked in around ₹28 crore, while Varshangalkku Shesham, featuring Vineeth Sreenivasan, amassed ₹21 crore.
Remarkably, the cumulative box office earnings of five Malayalam films released in February and March exceeded ₹500 crore, defying conventional industry norms. Hits like ‘Manjummel Boys’ and ‘Premalu’ contributed significantly to this success, along with ‘Bramayugam’ and ‘Abraham Ozler’, showcasing the growing appeal of Malayalam cinema beyond traditional markets. The latest release, ‘Aadujeevitham’ is also making waves in the industry, fetching Rs 100 crore in 9 days. Notably, a significant portion of this revenue came from theaters in smaller towns and remote villages, highlighting the expanding reach and infrastructure development within the Kerala film industry.
