How Oscar Issac’s Moon Knight May Become MCU’s Greatest Show

By Binged Bureau - Apr 02, 2022 @ 04:04 pm
How Oscar Issac’s Moon Knight May Become MCU’s Greatest Show

The first episode of Oscar Issac’s Moon Knight series is streaming now on Disney+ Hotstar. And it has won the hearts of the majority of Marvel fans upon its arrival. They are eulogizing the show for its spot-on, unique, and dark portrayal of the left “Fist of Khonshu”. There’s no denying that this show is very different from other Marvel Studios projects. Will it take MCU to new heights? Let’s dive deep into this scenario.

No single reference to MCU yet

The prominent American entertainment platform, Variety, has disclosed that the first four episodes of the Moon Knight series do not share any connection to the MCU. All of them solely focus on Steven Grant/Marc Spector. There are no mentions of the Avengers, Infinity Stones, the Blip, the Multiverse, or any other important MCU element in these episodes.

Issac and the series’ creator, Mohamed Diab, unearth that they realised that both Steven and Marc are psychologically complicated characters while filming the show. That’s why they decided to keep MCU out of the frame. The makers concentrated more on the emotional and psychological aspects of these characters.

Marvel Studios has never done something like Moon Knight before. It is great to see that the studio is willing to take risks and bestow a distinctive viewing experience to the fans. Plus, the first episode made the viewers fall in love with the protagonist even without touching the boundaries of MCU.

Moon Knight’s alternate personalities

Both personalities of Moon Knight are complicated, mysterious yet intriguing. First, we have Marc Spector serving as the lead personality in the show. He is a skilled mercenary who suffers from DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) after receiving powers from an Egyptian moon god, Khonshu. And Steven Grant functions as his alternate identity. He is an ordinary and warm hearted guy who works in a museum gift shop. Plus, he constantly suffers from memories and blackouts.

Marc and Steven are poles apart in terms of behaviour and skills. And Khonshu favours the former as he is more powerful and competent than the latter. In Episode 1, Marc takes the back seat while Steven remains in control most of the time. But whenever Steven senses any form of danger, Marc takes over control and protects both of them.

Fans have enjoyed a variety of superheroes, antiheroes, and villains since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Moon Knight deserves special recognition for providing an uncommon yet satisfying treat to the viewers.

Darker than previous MCU instalments

The very first scene of Episode 1 shows Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) stacking pieces of glass in his shoes as a sign of religious self-flagellation. Then we see Moon Knight beating the hell out of the jackal monster in the final moments. All these things hint at Marvel’s attempt to explore dark territories and offer something new to the fans.

Issac has revealed that the Marvel executives were not very enthusiastic about his decision to go with a high-pitched British accent and shaky mannerisms. But Kevin Feige trusted the actor’s instincts and offered him an opportunity to spin the iconic comic character in his way.

Watch Episode 1 of Moon Knight starring Oscar Issac on the Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform.
