OTT viewers will know that yesterday streaming giant Prime Video India revealed their big fat content slate for 2024. Prime Video announced a massive 69 titles yesterday, consisting of new Amazon original series, original movies, returning series and post-theatrical streaming rights.
While the just-announced titles seem compelling by themselves, it’s nothing different from what Netflix India announced in the last few months. Netflix too had announced a total of 45 titles, both originals and post-theatrical streaming titles in January and February. Prime Video India has done nothing new there.
But there’s one area where Prime Video India has really stood out spectacularly — and beaten its closest rivals Netflix and Hotstar hollow.
We’re talking about the South Indian titles in Prime Video’s new slate.
When it comes to diversity in content, Prime Video India stands head and shoulders above its rivals. The streamer has included original shows and movies in both Tamil and Telugu, much to the delight of viewers from the South of the country.
Of course, Hotstar has been pushing a lot of original Malayalam content, and Telugu too in recent times. But Prime Video’s slate looks far more exciting in comparison.
Netflix is the worst of the lot. It has done precious little to create original content in any Indian language other than Hindi. No Telugu or Tamil content from Netflix ever!
Included in Prime Video India’s announcements yesterday are the following –
1. Investigative crime thriller ‘Cheekati Lo’ – Telugu movie
2. Social satire movie ‘Uppu Kappu Rambu’ – Telugu movie
3. Suspense drama ‘Arabia Kadali’ – Telugu series
4. Rana Daggubati hosted series ‘The Rana Connection’ – Telugu chat show
5. The Viral Fever’s Panchayat Telugu remake ‘Sivarapalli’ – Telugu series
6. Supernatural murder mystery ‘Inspector Rishi’ – Tamil series
7. Period gangster drama ‘Gangs Kuruthi Punal’ – Tamil series
8. Kids action drama ‘Snakes and Ladders’ – Tamil series
9. The Viral Fever’s Panchayat Tamkl6 remake ‘Thalaivettiyaan Paalayam’ – Telugu series
10. Returning series suspense drama ‘Suzhal – The Vortex Season 2’ – Tamil series
Also included in the list are post theatrical streaming rights for the following –
11. Hari Hara Veera Mallu – Telugu film
12. Ustaad Bhagath Singh – Telugu film
13. Kanguva – Tamil film
14. Kantara 2 – Kannada movie
15. Family Star – Telugu movie
16. Ghaati – Telugu movie
17. Game Changer – Telugu movie
18. Thammudu – Telugu movie
19. Om Bhim Bush – Tamil movie
20. Vaa Vaathiyaar – Tamil movie
This means 20 out of 69 titles announced by Prime Video India yesterday are in the South languages of Tamil, Telugu and Kannada – 29% of all the announced content is South content.
Impressive, isn’t it!
