Talking about the trend of spin-offs, it’s more popular than ever. But there is a major problem with it: not all shows know how to hit the right spot with a spin-off.
There are two major problems associated. Firstly, most shows treat the spin-off as their B shows. Secondly, when the main show ends, they attempt to capitalize on the franchise with spin-offs, often without considering the fans’ requests or interest. It ends up being a fruitless attempt to milk a franchise.
To give a rough idea, think about the spin-offs of The Big Bang Theory or Breaking Bad. Young Sheldon is definitely something the fans wanted to see, but the newest spin-off of Georgie and Mandy isn’t something that fans wanted— a perfect example of a fruitless spin-off. On the other hand, Better Call Saul was a necessary spin-off of Breaking Bad because fans wanted to know the story of Saul Goodman.
Breaking Bad could have made another spin-off about Gustavo Fring, but they knew where to stop. This is how you make a good spin-off. And Generation V is playing the same game.
Firstly, it started in parallel with the mother show, The Boys. Though it gained enough hype because it’s part of The Boys universe, the show is intertwined with the main show and has an equal impact as The Boys has for this spin-off show.
Even the characters of Gen V aren’t just puppets here but play a very critical part in terms of storytelling; they are equally important. After the premiere of the show, it started a chain of cameos on both series.
One major problem that spin-off series add is the sense of fatigue. Thank Marvel and DC for this massacre, but Gen V doesn’t contribute to this. A series that adds to the main universe rather than capitalizing on the main series and taking the popularity from it is a good spin-off. A show like Gen V hits all the right notes in that sense.
As the new trailer suggests, we will see more of Gen V’s involvement, especially with characters such as Cate and Sam, who will play a critical role in the storytelling. Exciting times are ahead for The Boys universe.
