Legendary cinema personality Mrinal Sen’s biopic is about to release and there is huge uncertainty regarding the movie right now. ‘Padatik’ was slated to have its theatrical release in India and Bangladesh simultaneously but recent developments in the neighbouring country have paved the way for a pause in any activities in the film world. Padatik will not be released in Bangladesh right now.
There is a chance that it might have a release there later on. But releasing in both countries at the same time could have given the movie an edge at the box office. Chanchal Choudhury, who plays the lead role, is a Bangladeshi national and he is unable to attend the promotions for the movie. Another actor Ziaul Apurbo is Bangladeshi too and it is the same with him. The India-Bangladesh collaboration in the film could have deepened the bonds of the countries. But with the student uprising and overthrowing of the Prime Minister, there is a clearly visible tension between the two countries. There are two different narratives in social media and both seem to be hostile to the business of the film. There is a possibility of Indians wanting to ban or postpone the release of the movie owing to the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh.
A movie of such passion and ambition deserved a smooth release condition and accepting attitude from both countries. However, ‘Padatik’ is very relevant today and it Mrinal Sen’s philosophy might prove to be a blessing in disguise that accentuates communal harmony and international brotherhood among India and Bangladesh.
