Well, it has been only a month since 2022 has rolled around, but we have our first big theatrical success from Mollywood – ‘Hridayam‘. This coming-of-age Malayalam comedy-drama film has made five times its production cost and has provided a neat profit for the filmmakers and theatre owners. This Vineet Sreenivasan written and directed film is still going strong in theatres (in and outside India) and we expect it to continue bringing in the dough for a few more weeks (at least).
With a production budget of Rs. 7 crores, ‘Hridayam’ has managed to earn slightly over Rs. 35 crores in just two weeks. The film is well on its way to crossing the 50 crores mark and when it does, it will be a milestone film for most of its cast and crew, including its lead, Pranav Mohanlal. With the film doing so well in theatres, we are sure that the film producers will hold out on its OTT premiere for another month at least.
Still, given the fact ‘Hridayam’ is now 2022’s biggest Malayalam film (in terms of box office numbers), we are sure that major OTT platforms will be trying to get the Malayalam film for their streaming platform. We also wouldn’t be surprised if the film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in the coming future. This is because the film is doing a lot better abroad than in Kerala – primarily because of the rising Covid-19 and Omicron cases. Many film lovers in Kerala will be cautious of this virus crisis and would be waiting for the movie to drop on an OTT platform. With Disney+ Hotstar being only available in India at the moment, the film producers (as well as the streaming platform) could capitalize on this problem. However, for now, we have to wait and see.
