By this account, ‘Welcome To Chippendales’ should premiere on Disney Plus Hotstar most likely today. The series will stream in the one episode per week format, with two episodes dropping at the premiere of the show itself. The mini series ‘Welcome To Chippendales’ consists of eight episodes in all.
‘Welcome To Chippendales’ is created by Robert Siegel, and is adapted from the book ‘Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders’, written by K. Scot Macdonald and Patrick MontesDeOca. The series tells the story of Bombay-born Indian immigrant Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee, who founded the first male striptease dance club and troupe ‘Chippendales’, well-known for its male striptease performances.
The life story of Bombay-born Indian-American entrepreneur, Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee, is a fascinating account of heady success, salacious scandals and a disgraceful death. Following the phenomenal success of ‘Chippendales’, copycat clubs opened up elsewhere.
The eighties was a perilous time for Steve Banerjee. Worried about competition, Banerjee tried to burn down rival clubs, got business associates murdered, and indulged in other such ignominious deeds. Arrested, tried and jailed for murder and arson, Steve Banerjee finally hanged himself in jail in 1994.
Pakistani-origin actor Kumail Nanjiani has essayed Steve Banerjee in Hulu’s ‘Welcome To Chippendales’. Murray Bartlett, Annaleigh Ashford, Dan Stevens, Juliette Lewis, among others, form the rest of the cast. Incidentally, Salman Khan and Dev Patel were both reportedly interested in acquiring Steve Banerjee’s story for production.
