It’s happening!! Will Smith is all set to reprise his role from his 2007 hit – I am Legend – for a sequel. And he joins hands with Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther). Deadline first broke the news of Warner Bros. bringing the duo together as stars and producers.
The stage is set for record box office collections. Will Smith and Michael B Jordan – Both are huge stars on their own having delivered multiple hits at the box office. Will Smith has already won the best actor award at the 2022 Golden Globes and SAG Awards and is now the frontrunner to win his first Oscar as well for his role in ‘King Richard’. Also, ‘I Am Legend’, which was released in December 2007, opened to the largest ever box office collection for a non-Christman film released in the U.S. in December. It was the seventh highest grossing film of 2007 earning US$ 256 million in the U.S. and US$ 329 million globally for a total of US $ 585 million.
I am Legend was based on the 1954 novel of the same name. ‘I Am Legend’ (2007) was set in New York City after a virus, which was originally created to cure cancer, had wiped out most of mankind, leaving Neville (Will Smith) as the last human in New York. Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code) had adapted the screenplay for the movie back in 2007. As per the report, he returns and is expected to be one of the producers along with writing the screenplay.
No details on the plot of the sequel have been revealed yet. Given that Will Smith’s character – Spoiler Alert – dies at the end of the movie, it will be interesting to see how his character appears in the sequel.
The end of the original 2007 blockbuster had audiences divided as it was different from the book. In an alternate ending (which again was not the same as the book), Will Smith’s character lives. However, this ending was changed due to intensely negative reaction from test audiences.
Will Smith, as reports of the sequel became public, posted a teaser photo of the upcoming project on Instagram and tagged Jordan in it. Check it out:
