The 18th Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) which was touted to be held from April 1st – 5th 2020 like all other entertainment ventures is dealing with the coronavirus backlash. IFFLA was supposed to take place this year at Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center in Los Angeles. The Opening Night Gala presentation was set at ArcLight Hollywood, with an after-party to follow hosted by Spice Affair in Beverly Hills.
The festival has announced an opening ceremony titled An Evening with Imtiaz Ali, one of Hindi cinema’s most respected and charismatic writer-directors. Imtiaz Ali would be joined onstage by celebrated Indian filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap to discuss the scope and influence of Imtiaz Ali’s career.
The lineup had boasted of narrative and documentary features, and shorts for the festival’s 18th edition from 5 World, 1 North American, 4 U.S. and 10 Los Angeles premieres, spanning 12 languages, with 50% of all films premiering directed by women.
However, the festival has now decided to go online in response to the ongoing uncertainty in the film festival world. The previously announced 2020 lineup will be moved to 2021. But for its viewers, IFFLA will showcase over 120 Indian narrative features, documentaries, and shorts by festival alumni which will be available for free viewing on IFFLA website from June 19 to July 5.
The films curated into 12 categories will showcase Manish Acharya’s Loins of Punjab, Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, and Vikramaditya Motwane’s Trapped, Karishma Dev Dube’s Devi (Goddess), award-winning documentaries including Faiza Ahmad Khan’s hilarious Supermen of Malegaon, Rima Das’ Village Rockstars, Shubhashish Bhutiani’s Oscar-shortlisted short film Kush among others.
