IMDb’s Most Popular Indian Movies (2022) & Where to Stream on OTT

Movies and series international database portal IMDb has revealed a list of the most popular Indian movies which were released in the year 2022. And unsurprisingly, majority of the titles belong to the South Indian film industry. Check out which Indian movie has topped this list and where these films are streaming on OTT.

10. 777 Charlie (Streaming on Voot Select, Amazon Prime Video Rent)

Helmed by Kiranraj. K, the movie features Rakshit Shetty as the protagonist Dharma, who lives a lonely and dull life as a factory worker. His life suddenly takes a positive turn when a naughty and lively stray Labrador dog named Charlie enters his life. How Charlie’ presence changes Dharma’s perspective towards life and bonds with him, forms the film’s underlying premise.

9. Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)

The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name, and chronicles the account of the early days of Arulmozhi Varman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the movie features an ensemble cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, and Prakash Raj, amongst others.

8. Sita Ramam (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar)

Directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, the film is a period romantic drama that is narrated in two timelines around two decades apart. The story follows an orphaned Army man Lieutenant Ram (played by Dulquer Salmaan), who gets a mysterious love letter from a woman named Sita (Mrunal Thakur). But when he writes a letter to Sita, it does not reach her. Cut to 1985, a Pakistani student Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) gets involved in Ram and Sita’s love story and sets out to deliver the long-lost letter.

7. Major (Streaming on Netflix)

The film is inspired by the life, love, and legacy of the hero of the 26/11 2008 Mumbai attacks – Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, an Indian Army officer who served in the elite Special Action Group of the National Security Guards (NSG). The film narrates the events of how Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan saved the lives of many hostages during the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. Directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka, Adivi Sesh plays the titular role, and the film also features Revathi, Prakash Raj, and Sobhita Dhulipala, etc.

6. Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Voot Select)

Helmed by R. Madhavan, ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ is a biographical drama which is based on the life of former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely accused of selling confidential information to foreign entities and how he eventually fought back. ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ also features Simran (as Meera Narayanan), Rajit Kapur (as Vikram Sarabhai), and Gulshan Grover (as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam) besides special appearances by Shah Rukh Khan and Suriya.

5. Kantara (Streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)

The man vs nature centric film has been written and directed by and features actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty. The film is set in the fictional village of Kantara and follows the story of a hot-headed henchman named Shiva (Rishab Shetty). When a forest officer Murali (Kishore) tries to stop the local superstitions in the village and save the forest from the residents, Shiva locks horns with Murali with support from his landlord (Achyuth Kumar).

4. Vikram (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5)

Helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the star-studded action entertainer features the terrific trio of Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil alongside Suriya in a cameo. Kamal Haasan is essaying the titular character of a retired cop named Vikram, who is given the mission to rescue a top brass government official.

3. K.G.F: Chapter 2 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)

It is the second installment of Prashanth Neel’s 2018 directorial film K.G.F: Chapter 1’. Kannada star Yash reprises his role as the top-notch assassin Rocky who masqueraded as a laborer in the titular Kolar Gold Fields in the first film. The sequel showcases Rocky’s story arc as the new KGF boss and his fight against a formidable adversary and the government. KGF-2 also features Sanjay Dutt as the antagonist Adheera, Raveena Tandon, and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles.

2. The Kashmir Files (Streaming on Zee5)

The movie revolves around the sensitive subject matter pertaining to the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus, also known as Kashmiri Pandits, during the 1990s period in the Jammu and Kashmir region. Narrated in two timelines, the film’s plot follows a Kashmiri Hindu college student named Krishna (Darshan Kumar). After his parents are killed, he is adopted by schoolteacher Pushkar Nath (Anupam Kher). Eventually, Krishna sets out to find the truth about his family’s death. The film also features veteran actors Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi in important roles.

1. RRR (Streaming on Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5)

Helmed by S.S Rajamouli, the period action movie ‘RRR’ features Ram Charan and Jr.NTR in the lead roles and Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt in pivotal roles. The film is a fictional tale set in the 1920s that revolves around two legendary Indian revolutionaries namely Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (played by Jr. NTR).
