The Coronavirus pandemic has given rise to an all out war amongst streaming platforms. Top streaming platforms are leaving no stone unturned to the lion’s share of viewer eyeballs. An unlikely beneficiary of this passive-aggressive war is one surprising group of people – dubbing artists. Not only have dubbing artists in India benefitted from the glut of Covid-19 OTT content, it has been a veritable windfall for them. Stay with us as we tell you how.
For top streaming platforms across the world, there was a surprising silver lining to the dark Coronavirus cloud – a major uptick in subscribers and viewer base. Nearly every streaming platform reported an exponential growth in subscribers. OTT entertainment has become the only source of entertainment for millions of people around the world, as they stay put at home to flatten the Covid-19 curve.
But with increasing subscribers comes greater pressure to provide them with ample amounts of quality content. Streaming platforms are scrambling to keep their viewers’ ravenous appetite for OTT content sated. While Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are flush with English content, and ZEE5, ALTBalaji, MX Player and SonyLiv have enough Hindi content, it is regional viewers, that is Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada viewers that are left high and dry. They have to make do with poor quality movies and shows, or old content.
But that is no more the case. For streamers have hit upon a novel strategy to keep their regional viewers entertained. Almost every top foreign show or movie is now dubbed in the aforementioned languages and streamed on their respective streaming platforms. Hindi shows and movies are also being dubbed into the prominent south languages for the benefit of viewers. Amazon Prime, Netflix, ZEE5, SonyLiv, Voot Select, MX Player, etc have all dubbed their best shows and movies, both Originals and licensed, into various Indian languages. Not only Hindi and foreign content, even content in one south language is being dubbed into the remaining three languages.
Guess which group of people are inundated with work as a result of the above? Yes, dubbing artists! The sheer scale of content being dubbed into various Indian regional languages is mind-boggling. And dubbing artists are having a field day with the tsunami of work literally flowing in. Both independent dubbing artists and dubbing companies are loaded with work – a happy outcome of the current grave situation.
Well, all we can say is, more power to them!
